npe team
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Meta's NPE Team (New Product Experimentation) was the company's in-house experimental apps incubator, first announced in mid-2019. Its mandate was to build consumer-facing apps where Meta could test new social features and gauge their impact — with the explicit expectation that NPE apps would change rapidly and be shut down if they did not prove useful. Over the years it launched then shuttered a string of social experiments: dating apps (Sparked, Hotline-adjacent products), couples messaging (Tuned), calling apps (CatchUp), meme-makers (Whale, E.gg), a TikTok rival (Lasso), and many more. The incubator never produced a product successful enough to remain an independent brand, and after Meta's major layoffs in late 2022 the NPE organization was deprioritized.
02 / npe team FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Meta never announced a single official reason for winding down the NPE experiment, but the documented pattern is clear: none of its experiments caught on with users at scale — apps like Hobbi and Lasso 'didn't catch on,' Sparked's learnings were folded into Facebook Dating, and each launch ended in a quiet shutdown. After the late-2022 layoffs that cut 13% of Meta's workforce, the company shifted investment away from the consumer-apps incubator toward its core products and efficiency priorities.
