01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Tinder Social was a group-socializing feature inside the Tinder dating app, launched in 2016. It let users form groups of up to four friends, set a plan for the night — a concert, a game, happy hour — and swipe as a group to match with other groups heading out for the same kind of evening, opening a shared chat to arrange the meetup.
02 / Tinder Social FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Tinder retired the feature in 2017. It had only ever gained modest traction, and it launched with almost no marketing support. More importantly, it no longer fit the direction Tinder wanted to take: video, location-based and AI-driven features rather than group outings. The launch itself had also been rocky — it first shipped as opt-out, briefly exposing users' Facebook friends' Tinder activity, forcing a quick switch to opt-in.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Launch
After an April pilot in Australia, Tinder Social launches as a full feature in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India. Groups of up to four friends who opted in could match with other groups for nights out.
- Discontinued
Tinder discontinues Tinder Social. The feature had gained only modest adoption and did not fit the company's future direction, which was moving toward video, location and AI-driven features.
