drizly
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Drizly was an online alcohol marketplace: customers ordered beer, wine and spirits from local stores for home delivery, with stores running deliveries on its technology. Uber acquired it for $1.1 billion in 2021 and closed it in March 2024, folding it into Uber Eats.
02 / drizly FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Uber decided a standalone Drizly no longer made sense after three years of independent operation: alcohol delivery was already live on Uber Eats in 35 US states and over 25 countries, making the separate brand redundant. The 2020 data breach that exposed about 2.5 million customers, and the FTC's subsequent privacy order against Drizly, added to the case for consolidation. In January 2024 Uber announced the shutdown, with 150 Boston jobs at risk.
