Doodhwala
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Doodhwala was a Bengaluru-based milk-tech startup founded in 2015 by Aakash Agarwal and Ebrahim Akbari. It ran a mobile-first subscription platform delivering fresh milk and daily essentials (bread, eggs, groceries) to doorsteps by early morning across Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune, at one point handling around 30,000 deliveries a day.
02 / Doodhwala FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Doodhwala's unit economics never worked: it sold milk at MRP with no delivery fee while sending riders out each morning for orders as small as a single Rs. 20 packet, losing money on deliveries that cost far more than the margin. After failing to close an expected Series A round, the company suspended operations in October 2019; vendors later filed a police complaint alleging unpaid dues of several crores of rupees and bounced cheques.
