01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Grid was a collaborative spreadsheet app for the iPad and iPhone, built by San Francisco startup Binary Thumb (founded 2012 by Josh Leong, Michael Lin and Matt Monson, Y Combinator Summer 2012). Founder Josh Leong, a former Microsoft Excel 2013 designer, set out to reinvent the spreadsheet for touch devices: a matrix of finger-sized squares that could hold not just numbers but text, photos, contacts and maps, with real-time collaboration. The company raised about $2.15 million and appears on the Andreessen Horowitz investment list; Y Combinator later listed the company as inactive and the App Store listing was removed.
