01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Tress was a Ghanaian social community app for black women's hair, founded by software developers Priscilla Hazel (CEO), Esther Olatunde (CTO) and Cassandra Sarfo (CPO), who met at the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) in Accra. Dubbed 'the Instagram for afro hair', it let users upload hairstyle photos and discover the products used, the stylist's name and location, and the price — plus styling tips, salon discovery and a supportive community. It grew to more than 60,000 active users worldwide, joined the Y Combinator Fellowship in 2016 and Y Combinator's Winter 2017 batch.
