Otipy
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Otipy was an Indian farm-to-consumer startup founded in early 2020 by former Blinkit CTO Varun Khurana and Prashant Jain, a wholly owned subsidiary of Crofarm Agriproducts. It operated a B2B2C social-commerce platform: customers ordered fruit, vegetables and daily essentials before midnight through community resellers, and Otipy delivered within 12 hours of harvest the next morning, using AI demand prediction to minimize waste. It raised $44.2 million across four rounds (WestBridge Capital, SIG, Inflection Point Ventures and others) and at its mid-2023 peak delivered 30,000 orders every morning in Mumbai and Delhi NCR.
02 / Otipy FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Otipy ran out of cash when a $10 million fundraise expected in February 2025 from a new family-office investor did not come through. Existing investors were reluctant to infuse funds, wary of the growing footprint of quick-commerce platforms like Zepto, Blinkit and Instamart offering 10-minute deliveries against Otipy's next-morning model. Cash-flow troubles had begun around mid-2024; by May 2025 there were salary delays, unpaid vendors and senior-leadership exits.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Founded
Otipy was founded in early 2020 by Varun Khurana and Prashant Jain as a Crofarm Agriproducts subsidiary; its name is a play on one-time passwords (OTP), meant to convey trust.
- Series B
Otipy raised a $32 million Series B led by WestBridge Capital in March 2022, after a $10.2M Series A from SIG in July 2021, bringing total funding to about $44.2 million.
- Shutdown
On May 17, 2025 Otipy shut operations abruptly. The expected $10 million February round had not materialized, and existing investors declined to fund further. About 300 employees were told to seek other opportunities; salaries and vendor payments were left pending.
