01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Lipella Pharmaceuticals was a Pittsburgh-based clinical-stage biotech company that developed drugs by reformulating the active agents in existing generic drugs. Its lead candidate, LP-10, was a liposomal oral rinse of the immunosuppressant tacrolimus for symptomatic oral lichen planus (OLP), a chronic inflammatory mouth condition — with the goal of becoming the first FDA-approved OLP treatment. Other programs included LP-310 (tacrolimus for oral lichen planus), LP-410 (oral liposomal tacrolimus for graft-versus-host disease) and LP-50 (intravesical immunoglobulins for bladder cancer).

02 / Lipella Pharmaceuticals FAILURE REASONS

Why it failed

Lipella ran out of money before it could turn promising data into an approvable product. In September 2025, LP-10 hit the key safety endpoint in a 27-patient phase 2a study with meaningful reductions in pain and sensitivity, and the company planned a phase 2b. But it was delisted from Nasdaq after its stock was suspended on June 20, 2025, cutting off its funding lifeline. With no path to finance the next trial, the company filed a voluntary Chapter 11 petition on March 30, 2026 to pursue an asset sale 'to maximize value for creditors.'
