01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Reebeez was an Austin, Texas-based startup in Y Combinator's Summer 2016 batch that developed microengines for drones and robots. Its patented solid-state thermoelectrophotovoltaic propulsion system ran on lightweight combustible fuels like butane, promising specific energy eight times better than lithium polymer batteries — extending drone flight times from the typical 18–20 minutes to over two hours, and increasing endurance sixfold. Applications included aerial surveys, medicine transport, wildlife monitoring and retail delivery. The company held six granted patents.
