01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Missfresh (每日优鲜) was a Chinese online grocery company founded in Beijing in 2014. It pioneered 30-minute grocery delivery in China from a network of pre-positioned mini-warehouses near residential compounds, selling fresh meat, fruit and vegetables. It went public on Nasdaq in June 2021, raising $273 million at a $2.5 billion valuation. After running out of cash in 2022, it suspended its core instant-delivery business in July 2022, laid off most of its staff, and faced supplier, salary and investor lawsuits; it later faced delisting from Nasdaq.

02 / Missfresh FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Missfresh's collapse came from years of heavy cash burn in a fiercely contested market. It competed against giants such as Alibaba's Freshippo, Dingdong Maicai and Pinduoduo's Duoduo Grocery, all better capitalized and subsidized. The company's mini-warehouse model never reached sustainable unit economics despite $1.8 billion raised; when financing dried up after the 2021 IPO — and a last-minute CNY 200 million rescue deal fell through — it ran out of cash, defaulted on suppliers, delayed salaries, and suspended its core business.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN

How the factors connect

  1. 01

Missfresh raised a total of $1.8 billion from investors, including a $362 million round in Q1 2021 and $273 million from its June 2021 IPO at a $2.5 billion valuation.

  2. 02

In July 2022 it ran out of cash and suspended its core instant-delivery business, which had accounted for about 85% of revenue; it sold its convenience-shopping business for $30 million in August 2022.

  3. 03

Employees and US investors sued over unpaid salaries and allegedly defective IPO disclosures; no realized loss figure with a disclosed subject, period and basis was found — the reported CNY 3.7 billion figure for 2021 was a projection, not a confirmed audited result.
