Zovio
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Zovio, founded in 2004 as Bridgepoint Education, was an online education services company. It once operated the for-profit Ashford University and University of the Rockies online, then sold Ashford to the University of Arizona in 2020 and pivoted to education-as-a-service: online program management for the renamed University of Arizona Global Campus, plus TutorMe and Fullstack Academy. After the UAGC contract was terminated in August 2022, the board closed the business in September 2022.
02 / Zovio FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Regulatory strangulation did the work: settlements in Iowa (2014) and with the federal CFPB (2016), then in March 2022 a California judge fined it 22.4 million dollars for misleading Ashford students. The 2020 Ashford sale was meant to fund a pivot, but the UAGC services agreement was itself a loss contract; when UAGC terminated it in August 2022, Zovio sold TutorMe and Fullstack and filed for Chapter 11.
