01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Human Horizons was the Shanghai-based electric-vehicle technology company behind the luxury HiPhi brand, founded in 2017 by Chinese automotive industry veteran Ding Lei. It entered China's burgeoning EV market with the flamboyantly styled HiPhi X in 2020 — a large MPV distinguished by chisel-nose styling and complex gullwing rear doors — followed by the HiPhi Z and HiPhi Y. Its high-end battery-electric cars sold for $70,000-$120,000, and the company had planned a European entry with German TÜV homologation already granted for the X.

02 / HiPhi (Human Horizons) FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Human Horizons was crushed by cut-throat price competition in China's oversaturated EV market: the HiPhi brand delivered fewer than 8,000 cars in 2023 and the company ran out of cash, reportedly failing to pay its January 2024 wage bill. It halted production in February 2024 for six months while seeking refinancing and a joint-venture partner, cutting employee pay toward minimum wage. High-level rescue talks with FAW, Changan and iAuto Group all collapsed. On August 8, 2024 the Yancheng Economic and Technological Development Zone court accepted its filing for pre-bankruptcy restructuring — a final six-to-nine-month attempt to attract investment and avoid complete bankruptcy.
