Insteon
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Insteon was a smart home hardware and software company, a subsidiary of SmartLabs, that developed one of the earliest smart home ecosystems. Its proprietary Insteon protocol combined powerline networking with 900MHz wireless in a dual-mesh network, promising more reliable communication than wireless-only systems. The company sold hubs, switches, thermostats and plugs, and was one of the two launch partners for Apple's HomeKit in 2015. In mid-April 2022 its servers abruptly went dark with no warning, bricking the app and automations of its customers.
02 / Insteon FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
In a belated note to the Insteon Community, the company said pandemic-related supply-chain issues had forced it to seek a buyer in November 2021; despite several interested parties, none closed a deal. In March 2022 the company was assigned to a financial services firm to optimize its assets, which observers read as a de facto liquidation to satisfy creditors. The company gave no advance warning to customers before pulling the plug on its servers on April 16, 2022.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Asset sale
Insteon hubs/app cloud failed ~15 Apr 2022; parent SmartLabs transferred assets 22 Mar 2022 to SmartLabs (ABC) LLC to sell assets and pay creditors (formal dissolution). Ars Technica quotes company site: pandemic/supply-chain disruption, sale expected March did not materialize, assigned to financial firm.
