Chowbotics

The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.

01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Chowbotics, founded in 2014, built Sally — a vending-machine-like robot that made fresh made-to-order meals. In a 3-by-3-foot space, Sally assembled custom salads, grain bowls, yogurt parfaits, poke bowls, cereals and snacks from up to 20 ingredient canisters, then sealed each meal in an air-tight refrigerated container for safety and freshness. The robots were deployed as satellite food locations in hospitals, universities and corporate cafeterias, promising salad bars without extra manpower. In February 2021 DoorDash acquired Chowbotics for an undisclosed sum, hoping Sally could help restaurants expand menus. Seventeen months later, on July 11, 2022, DoorDash announced it would cease operations of the Chowbotics business, effective August 31, 2022.

02 / Chowbotics FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Chowbotics did not die as an independent company — it died as a bad acquisition fit inside DoorDash. First, strategy mismatch: DoorDash bought the company flying high on pandemic-fueled delivery revenue to diversify into robotics, but a delivery logistics company and a food-kiosk hardware business turned out to be different games; DoorDash concluded the robotic kiosks 'just weren't the right fit' for the food delivery service. Second, investment discipline: DoorDash framed the shutdown in its own product-portfolio language — 'we create an environment to build new products and set high standards to determine when to scale, continue, or cut back investments' — and CEO Tony Xu spoke of a 'maniacal focus' on unit economics before scaling any business. Third, the product itself was shaky: an early adopter, Salad Station founder Scott Henderson, said Sally's long-term future was unclear and that 'when customers needed Sally the most ... the technology proved unreliable during the pandemic.' Fourth, the timing: DoorDash's revenue was regressing toward the mean as the pandemic boom faded, and it was simultaneously digesting an $8.1 billion acquisition of Wolt — a speculative salad-robot side project did not survive the portfolio review. The acquisition is best understood as a write-off 17 months after the deal.
