Blippar
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Blippar was a London-based augmented reality company founded in 2011 by Ambarish Mitra (with Omar Tayeb, Steve Spencer and Jess Butcher). Its mobile app let users point their phone camera at real-world objects and see them enhanced with text, music, games and digital graphics - it created the first AR digital ad platform and built branded AR 'experiences' for Cadbury, Heinz, Walkers and Domino's, plus a Planet Earth II partnership with the BBC. At its peak it was a UK tech 'unicorn' valued over $1 billion, with offices from Singapore to San Francisco and 200 employees, having raised $130M+ from Qualcomm, Candy Ventures and Malaysia's Khazanah. On December 17, 2018 it entered administration and laid off all employees.
02 / Blippar FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Blippar burned $120-130 million faster than AR went mainstream. The proximate cause was shareholder drama: in December 2018 an emergency $5M funding injection - on top of a $37M round closed in September - was blocked by one shareholder (reportedly Malaysia's Khazanah), and the company said it had 'no current option other than to give notice to start insolvency proceedings'. But the deeper causes were structural: it was leapfrogged by Apple and Google's AR platforms, revenue never caught up with spending, and it kept changing strategy - an AR ad platform, a visual browser, facial recognition, a Silicon Valley office - eroding focus and trust. A unicorn valuation bought it time; it did not buy it a business.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Bankruptcy
BBC reports AR unicorn Blippar collapsed into administration; David Rubin & Partners joint administrators Paul Appleton and Paul Cooper were appointed, and Blippar’s Twitter said it had gone into administration that day.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Burn rate is the real enemy: $130M bought years of runway and zero sustainability.
- 02
One shareholder can kill you: give a blocking investor that power and they will use it.
- 03
Platform giants will eat your lunch: Apple and Google made standalone AR apps redundant.
- 04
Stop pivoting, start focusing: Blippar changed strategies so often employees lost trust.
- 05
Unicorn valuations are not businesses: $1B on paper meant nothing when the cash ran out.
