FlightCar
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
FlightCar was a peer-to-peer car rental marketplace focused on airports. Travelers parked their cars for free at FlightCar lots near airports while away, and the company rented those cars to other travelers at rates cheaper than traditional agencies, paying owners per mile driven. It was founded in 2013 by Rujul Zaparde, Kevin Petrovic and Shri Ganeshram.
02 / FlightCar FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors
CEO Rujul Zaparde said FlightCar failed to consistently deliver on experience (slow airport pickup/dropoff; cars not clean enough) despite customer belief in the model; Trinity Ventures’ Patricia Nakache described prioritizing growth before product-market fit and unit economics on a labor-intensive airport valet model.
