Tilkee (Acquired Distress)
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Tilkee was a Lyon, France sales-enablement SaaS founded in 2013 by Sylvain Tillon and Timothée Saumet. Its software let salespeople send commercial documents and see, in real time and with precision, exactly how each prospect read them — when they opened, what they lingered on — so reps could call at the right moment with an adapted pitch and optimize follow-ups; the company claimed it lifted conversion rates 20-100%. Certified ISO 27001 and HDS, GDPR-compliant and integrated with Salesforce and Microsoft Dynamics, Tilkee positioned itself as the European alternative to American rivals like PandaDoc, DocSend and DocuSign. It raised €500K in 2014 (Axeleo Capital, Kreaxi) and €3.5M in 2017 led by Omnes Capital (Evolem Start, Crédit Agricole Création) — about $5.2M total — reaching 24 employees and ~€100K monthly recurring revenue by end-2017. In February 2022 it was acquired by French document-management software vendor Efalia.
02 / Tilkee (Acquired Distress) FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Tilkee ended as a distressed acquisition. Founded 2013 and backed by ~€4M in venture money, it had reached ~€100K MRR and 24 employees by end-2017 — respectable but far from the scale needed to stand alone in sales enablement against well-funded American rivals (Seismic, Highspot, Showpad, DocuSign). Rather than continue as an independent, it was sold in February 2022 to Efalia, a Lyon document-management software vendor, which folded Tilkee into its document-management and BPM suite as a product-synergy deal. The independent run that began in 2013 ended with the startup absorbed into a larger software group.
