01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
CourseKey was a San Diego-based vertical SaaS company digitizing trade and vocational schools. Founded by Thiel Fellow Luke Sophinos and founding team member Fadi George Kannah (who had fled Iraq as a refugee and architected the platform) along with Ryan Vanshur, Marc Barron, Michael Woo, and Luan Nguyen, the team partnered in 2017 with a large vocational education provider to launch what Sophinos described as 'the world's first trade school management system.' The platform automated daily classroom procedures like attendance and grading, enhanced the student experience through communication tools, helped identify at-risk students, simplified compliance, tracked skill attainment, and ran evaluations and exams. After 200% ARR growth in 2020, CourseKey raised $9 million in March 2021 to serve 'every trade school in the country' and challenge the narrative that four-year college is the 'only option.'
