Odeo
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
Podcast creation, directory, and search tools
Odeo provided tools for creating and sharing podcasts together with a directory and search service for syndicated audio and video.
02 / Odeo FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Classic platform risk: one week after Odeo's public launch in June 2005, Apple released iTunes 4.9 with built-in podcast discovery and subscriptions, destroying Odeo's reason to exist overnight against free, pre-installed distribution. Unable to compete, Williams bought the assets back from investors in October 2006, folded the team into Obvious Corporation and pivoted to a side project — Twitter.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Company founded
Evan Williams and Noah Glass found Odeo in San Francisco as a podcasting platform, raising $5 million from Charles River Ventures.
- Product launch
Odeo launches publicly in July 2005; one week earlier Apple had released iTunes 4.9 with native podcast support.
- Restructuring completed
In October 2006 Williams buys Odeo's assets back from investors, forms Obvious Corporation and pivots the team to Twitter.
- Acquisition
Odeo is sold to SonicMountain in February 2007; the podcasting service shuts down completely by 2010.
