01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Mr Yum is a Melbourne-based mobile ordering and payments platform for hospitality, founded in 2018 by co-founder and CEO Kim Teo. Its web-first QR code ordering — with photos of every dish — let diners browse visual menus, order and pay from their phones, and gave venues an integrated CRM and marketing stack; the company billed itself as 'the Shopify for restaurants'. The pandemic made its QR codes ubiquitous in Australia, and in November 2021 Mr Yum raised a $65 million USD Series A led by Tiger Global, the largest for a female-led Australian startup, with 13 million users and more than 1,500 venues across Australia, the US and UK. No shutdown, bankruptcy or acquisition has been reported.
