Favo
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Favo (Mercado Favo) was a Peruvian social-commerce grocery startup founded in 2019 by Alejandro Ponce and Marina Proença. Inspired by China's Pinduoduo and community-group-buying model, it enabled under-employed entrepreneurs ('community leaders') to take grocery orders through local social networks; Favo's logistics system then filled the orders and delivered them in bulk to the entrepreneur the next day for last-mile delivery. It raised $26.5 million in Series A funding led by Tiger Global in October 2021 (about $37 million total), expanded into Brazil, then withdrew: it fired 171 people while closing Brazil, and in January 2024 announced the closure of its Peruvian operations, ending a five-year journey.
