Trace Genomics
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Trace Genomics was an agricultural genomics company that gave farmers genetic insights into their soil. Founded in 2015 as PathoGn by Stanford scientists Diane Wu and Poornima Parameswaran — who met in Nobel laureate Andrew Fire's lab — it used next-generation sequencing to map the living soil microbiome, selling its TraceCOMPLETE platform to farmers, ag retailers and crop-input companies. The proprietary engine measured 1 million acres, benchmarked 535 million, and generated over 10 million data points per field at better than 80% gross margins. The company raised about $50 million and moved its lab to Ames, Iowa.
02 / Trace Genomics FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Despite strong customer validation, Trace Genomics could not turn science into a sustainable business. It missed its 2024 revenue goals and could not raise the capital needed to reach profitability — as a ten-year-old company its trajectory no longer fit what venture investors demand. Falling grain prices, broader struggles across the ag industry and a tightening agtech funding market in 2023–2024 made capital especially hard to access. A broad M&A process in late 2024 failed to find a buyer on acceptable terms, and with limited runway and growing creditor pressure, continued operations became unfeasible.

Events in the structured record
- Founded
Diane Wu and Poornima Parameswaran found PathoGn in 2015 to commercialize soil-microbiome sequencing; it later becomes Trace Genomics.

- Assignment for creditors
With no viable alternatives, Trace Genomics initiates an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors in May 2025, the formal insolvency proceeding.
- Asset acquisition
On July 7, 2025, Miraterra acquires Trace Genomics' assets — the full IP portfolio, in-market products and the Ames, Iowa lab.

- 02
On July 7, 2025, British Columbia-based Miraterra acquired the company's assets, including all intellectual property, in-market products and the analytical lab in Ames, Iowa.
