Arrival
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Arrival was a British electric vehicle maker founded in 2015 by Denis Sverdlov, pursuing electric vans, buses and taxis built in localised 'microfactories' using cell-based robotic assembly instead of traditional production lines. It went public in March 2021 via a SPAC merger with CIIG Merger Corp, valued at around $5.4 billion (briefly much higher at its peak), backed by Hyundai and with UPS placing an early order for 10,000 vans — making it one of the most hyped EV startups of the pandemic SPAC boom.
02 / Arrival FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Arrival never managed to get its debut electric van to market. It spent heavily on robot-heavy factories in Banbury and Bicester while facing high interest rates, inflation and EV-sector supply chain issues; it pulled back from the UK to chase the North American market and cut some 800 UK jobs. When it missed a December 1, 2023 debt interest payment, shares had already fallen over 95%, Nasdaq delisted it in January 2024, and rescue funding or a sale — estimated to need at least $500 million to reach breakeven — never materialized.
