01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Calyxt was a plant-based synthetic biology company founded in 2010 as a spinout of Cellectis. It used TALEN gene-editing technology — molecular scissors that create desirable traits without adding foreign DNA — to develop crop products including Calyno, a high-oleic, zero-trans-fat soybean oil; high-fiber wheat; improved alfalfa; hemp; and winter oats. The company went public on Nasdaq (CLXT) in 2017 and sold traits and seeds through licensing and partnerships across the agricultural supply chain.
