Crejo.Fun
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Crejo.Fun was a Bengaluru-based edtech startup founded in 2020 by Ankit Agarwal and Vikas Bansal, building an online platform for children's extracurricular activities. It helped children discover their passions and interests through creative learning: live online classes in yoga, chess, dance, public speaking, and arts and crafts, among others. The pandemic gave the platform a strong tailwind - the company claimed customer ratings of 4.9 and said it continued to grow even after schools reopened (roughly 7x growth in the last six months before shutdown). Backed by Matrix Partners and 021 Capital with a $3 million pre-seed round, the company employed 170-200 people. In June 2022 the cofounders informed employees in a town hall that the company would wind down operations; they refunded fees to all customers, placed more than 90 percent of employees in new jobs, paid July salaries plus one month's severance, and tried to sell the IP and product to return some investor capital.
02 / Crejo.Fun FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Crejo.Fun was a victim of the pandemic cycle reversal and the funding winter. Its growth was built on closed schools: when schools reopened after the pandemic, kids enrolling on the platform dropped drastically, and the third edtech startup to wind down in 2022 after Udayy and SuperLearn, Crejo became part of a sector-wide correction as five edtech startups - Udayy, Qin1, Crejo.Fun, Lido Learning, and SuperLearn - were forced to shut down that year. The funding environment had turned hostile: although the company tried for months to raise capital, it could not secure a round, and it was simply running out of funds. The online-only extracurricular model proved unsustainable once offline options returned and venture money dried up, leaving the company no choice but to wind down.
