01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

HiPhi was the luxury electric-vehicle brand of Shanghai-based Human Horizons, founded in 2017 by automotive industry veteran Ding Lei. It debuted with the flamboyantly styled HiPhi X in 2020 — a 5,200mm six-seater with gullwing rear doors — followed by the HiPhi Z and the more affordable HiPhi Y. Its high-end battery-electric cars sold for $70,000-$120,000 (the Y from about $47,000). The X earned German TÜV passenger-car homologation as HiPhi prepared a European entry, and in 2023 the company agreed a $5.6 billion joint venture with Saudi Arabia's investment ministry.

02 / HiPhi FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

HiPhi was crushed by cut-throat price competition in China's oversaturated EV market: it delivered fewer than 8,000 cars in 2023 and ran out of cash, reportedly failing to pay its January 2024 wage bill. In February 2024 it halted production for six months while seeking refinancing and a joint-venture partner, cutting employee pay toward minimum wage. Rescue talks with Changan, FAW and iAuto Group all collapsed. In August 2024 parent company Human Horizons filed for court-driven pre-bankruptcy restructuring in Yancheng (accepted August 8, 2024), the final attempt to avoid complete bankruptcy.
