01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Misfit Foods is a US food company founded in 2014 by Georgetown University graduates Ann Yang and Phil Wong. It began as Misfit Juicery, making cold-pressed juices from 'ugly' or imperfect produce that could not be sold in supermarkets, and at its peak reached 150 doors including Whole Foods, Dig Inn and Eataly in New York and Washington, DC. In 2019 the company shut down the juice business and pivoted to sausages made of about 50% humanely-raised chicken and 50% vegetables, positioning itself for flexitarian consumers; it appeared on Shark Tank and expanded nationwide through Whole Foods, FreshDirect and others.
