Carsabi
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Carsabi was a used-car search aggregator founded in October 2011 in San Francisco by Christopher Berner and Dwight Crow, a two-person team. Pitching itself as the 'Google for used cars,' it crawled Craigslist, dealer websites and specialty auto classifieds to surface real-time deals ranked by savings rather than raw price. It graduated from Y Combinator's Winter 2012 batch, earned a spot on TechCrunch's list of the ten best Demo Day companies, and raised a seed round from Y Combinator and DCVC (about $20K total per CB Insights). In December 2012 it was acquired by Ark.com.
02 / Carsabi FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
The core failure was structural: Carsabi's entire value proposition depended on scraping Craigslist listings without a data licensing agreement, and when Craigslist blocked access, traffic halved overnight. With only two employees and roughly $20,000 in total funding, the company had no resources to negotiate, litigate or rebuild around alternative data sources. Two months after the blockade's effects set in, the founders were acqui-hired by Facebook (October 2012), which took the team but not the product — an early signal the standalone business was not viable. The remaining product was then sold to Ark.com, which closed it by February 2014.
