01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Solubag develops a patented water-soluble material that looks and behaves like plastic but dissolves in water within minutes, leaving no toxic residue. Invented by Chilean researchers Roberto Astete and Cristian Olivares (originally during biodegradable-detergent experiments, using a limestone derivative instead of oil byproducts), the formula is used for bags, cutlery, plates, straws and laundry sheets. The company, headquartered in Hallandale Beach, Florida, raised $4.5 million from Exit Ventures.
