Okra
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Okra was a Lagos, Nigeria-based open finance infrastructure company founded in 2019 by Fara Ashiru Jituboh and David Peterside. Its APIs and Okra Widget let users securely connect their bank accounts to third-party apps, powering account and identity data, real-time balances, categorized transactions, income signals, KYC checks, and bank-to-bank payments for banks, fintechs, and merchants across Africa. It raised about $16.5 million from investors including TLcom Capital and Susa Ventures, and was once considered one of Africa's most promising B2B fintechs. In May 2025, after five years, the company wound down operations; co-founder Fara Ashiru confirmed the closure and moved to a UK startup the following month.
02 / Okra FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Okra was crushed by macroeconomic mismatch: Nigeria's naira kept depreciating while its cloud infrastructure bills (AWS, Azure) were denominated in dollars, making costs unsustainable. A late-2024 pivot, Nebula — a naira-priced cloud offering meant to hedge FX risk — failed to gain traction in a market dominated by AWS and Google Cloud. Open banking adoption also moved slowly among conservative Nigerian tier-1 banks, and leadership departures (Peterside in 2022, Ashiru stepping down in 2025) sapped execution speed. The shutdown was handled gracefully: remaining funds were returned to investors and staff received up to six months of severance.
