01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Lidya was a Nigerian digital lender founded in 2016 by former Jumia executives Tunde Kehinde and Ercin Eksin. It provided fast, collateral-free loans to small and medium-sized businesses through a digital platform using AI-driven credit scoring on alternative data (mobile records, bank statements, social media activity). Loans of $500 to $150,000 were typically approved within 24 to 48 hours, and the company also offered digital accounts for invoicing, payment tracking and cash-flow management. Over its lifetime it reviewed more than $50 billion in credit applications and disbursed over $150 million to 32,000 businesses.

02 / Lidya FAILURE REASONS

Why it failed

Lidya fell into severe financial distress that restructuring could not reverse: mounting credit risk in Nigeria's volatile lending environment, tightening funding conditions, and operational strain from an aggressive 2020 expansion into Poland and the Czech Republic (reversed in 2023). Internal governance frayed as the company chased scale — CEO Kehinde and CTO Cristiano Machado both exited in late 2024, and the Portugal-based tech team disbanded after payroll delays. Months of customer complaints about frozen funds and failed transactions through its Lidya Collect loan-recovery platform eroded trust, and the company told customers it could no longer process funds or settle claims.
