01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Inq Mobile was a British social software and handset company, a fully owned subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa founded by Frank Meehan in 2008. It first made affordable social mobiles with deep Facebook integration, notably the Inq1, which won Best Handset at the GSMA awards in 2009. After the handset business faded, the company pivoted to mobile apps: Material, a predictive content aggregation app that became the top free news app in the UK App Store, and SO.HO, a social Android launcher. In January 2014 the company announced it was closing down permanently; Material served its final edition on January 28, 2014.

02 / Inq Mobile FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

The company gave no official reason for its closure. What the record shows is a two-act story: the handset business that made its name with the Inq1 could not survive the smartphone era dominated by Apple and Android flagships, and the pivot to apps came late and thin, with Material and SO.HO unable to build a sustainable business before the parent pulled the plug. Contemporary reporting guessed that intense competition in mobile apps played a part, but Inq never published a postmortem.
