01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Udacity is the online education platform founded in 2011 by Sebastian Thrun, David Stavens and Mike Sokolsky, born out of free Stanford computer science classes. After Thrun's famous 'lousy product' reckoning in 2013, it pivoted from university-style courses to vocational 'Nanodegrees' for tech professionals — project-based programs in AI, machine learning, data and programming, co-created with industry leaders and backed by human mentors. Having raised $163 million and served more than 21 million registered learners in 195 countries, Udacity evolved into an enterprise talent-transformation platform. On March 5, 2024 Accenture announced it would acquire Udacity to anchor its AI-powered LearnVantage learning business; the acquisition completed on May 20, 2024, with Udacity's 230+ professionals joining Accenture.
