01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Dashblock was a Paris-based developer-tools startup founded in 2019 and backed by Y Combinator's Summer 2019 batch. Its software turned any website into an API: using machine learning, it extracted structured data from any web page and built web automation without coding, letting users configure their own APIs in a few clicks.

02 / Dashblock FAILURE REASONS

Failure factors supported by the current evidence

Co-founder Maxime Corbani (13 Jun 2022) says Dashblock onboarded every inbound prospect to build a generic web-automation tool, producing an unclear value proposition, unreplicable sales, a hard-to-maintain codebase, and linear growth; YC pushed a narrower use case they did not take.

Product Strategy

Corbani: onboarded everybody into a generic tool for any web automation need instead of one use case.

Go To Market

Unclear value prop, poor conversion, highly custom unreplicable sales, users lacked autonomy.

Engineering

Very different feature requests produced a complex, hard-to-maintain codebase.

03 / EVENT HISTORY

Events in the structured record

  1. Liquidation

Co-founder Maxime Corbani 13 Jun 2022 (opened): discusses 'the biggest mistake we made building Dashblock' and writes that alternative plans would have allowed Dashblock 'to be alive by default,' i.e. it was not then a going concern.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN

How the factors connect

  1. 01

Dashblock presented at Y Combinator's Summer 2019 Demo Day, raising a $125,000 YC deal, and grew a small team of around 2 to 10 people.

  2. 02

The product competed in the crowded no-code web-scraping space alongside many similar API-from-website tools.

  3. 03

PitchBook classifies Dashblock as Out of Business, with the classification dated December 27, 2023; no public shutdown announcement, bankruptcy filing or failure reasons were found.

  4. 04

This record marks a liquidation event in 2022, which is retained as-is but could not be independently verified in public sources.
