01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Maitian.ai was a Singapore computer-vision startup, a Y Combinator Winter 2019 company founded by Wenfeng Xia and Ye Xia. It promised to build $1,000 Amazon Go-style grab-and-go stores: open marketplaces powered by computer vision, inviting chain restaurants and other partners to run the logistics while Maitian took a cut of each sale. The company also described itself as a maker of AI-powered smart vending and self-service checkout equipment.
