01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Farmshelf was a Brooklyn-based indoor-farming startup founded in October 2015 by Andrew Shearer, a former Pinterest partner manager who built it in a San Francisco garage. It sold internet-connected, bookshelf-sized hydroponic mini-farms — $7,000 to $8,250 per unit, with more than 75 in the market — that grew 50+ leafy greens, herbs, and edible flowers via LED lights, sensors, cameras, and a companion app, with a $105/month seed-and-nutrient subscription. Customers included celebrity-chef restaurants, corporate cafeterias, and hotels; BMW's Mini brand backed it through the Urban-X incubator. During the pandemic it launched Farmshelf Home, a smaller version for home use.
