01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Buzzbike was a UK bike subscription pioneer founded in 2016 by former Apple marketing executive Tom Hares and KPMG consultant Andrew Nunn. It began as a brand-funded free-bike scheme (ads on bike frames, with partners such as PayPal/Braintree and HSBC), then transitioned in 2020 to an all-inclusive subscription model for city cyclists: members paid monthly for a city bike or e-bike plus lock, theft replacement and repairs, with everything managed via an app - £18.99 a month for a single-speed city bike, £59.99 for an urban e-bike. It served residents in London and Manchester, helped 20,000 people cycle over its eight-year lifespan, and counted household brands including Spotify, ASOS, Disney and Sony as clients. Despite record revenues in 2024, it closed its operations at the end of November 2024 amid escalating costs and a collapse of its largest shareholder and supplier, Signa Sports United (parent of Wiggle).

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN

How the factors connect

  1. 01

Buzzbike was founded in 2016 by Tom Hares and Andrew Nunn, first as a brand-funded model: free bikes for commuters in exchange for ads on the frames and public parking - partners included Braintree/PayPal and HSBC.

  2. 02

In 2020 it transitioned to an all-inclusive subscription: bike, lock, theft replacement and repairs managed via app, from £18.99 a month (£59.99 for e-bikes), serving London and Manchester and clients including Spotify, ASOS, Disney and Sony.

  3. 03

Over eight years it helped 20,000 people cycle; in April 2023 its accounts showed it owed £3.7 million to creditors due within a year.

  4. 04

Despite record revenues in 2024, the company announced in November 2024 it would close at the end of the month, citing escalating costs and difficult economic conditions across the bike industry.

  5. 05

The collapse of its largest shareholder and supplier, Signa Sports United (Wiggle's parent company), was a decisive blow; closing riders were offered their current bikes at an extremely discounted price.

  6. 06

No reliable realized loss figure with clear subject, period and basis has been disclosed; funding raised is not a loss.
