Maxwell Plus
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Maxwell Plus was an Australian AI healthcare startup founded in 2016 by Elliot Smith. It built a machine-vision-powered clinician support system for early prostate cancer detection, one of the first investments of Main Sequence Ventures (invested 2017). The company tested thousands of Australian men and helped find 35 cases of clinically significant prostate cancer that other tests had missed. Despite working technology that crossed the regulatory-approval hurdle, it failed to prove its business model and reach product-market fit, and closed down after six years.
02 / Maxwell Plus FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Maxwell Plus failed on go-to-market execution, not technology. The team spent two years in the lab with little customer or clinical engagement, burning through most of its initial capital before approaching investors with an incomplete story. Its radical direct-to-consumer model - men subscribing to an AI-powered prostate cancer guardian - alienated clinicians who saw it as a threat, and investors balked: as the founder put it, they were too early for both telehealth and the AI hype wave. A small follow-on investment from Main Sequence was not enough to change the outcome, and the company could not raise fresh funding.
