Kuvée

The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.

01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Kuvee was a smart wine bottle startup led by CEO Vijay Manwani. Its Kuvée FreshPour system ($199) combined a WiFi-connected touchscreen 'bottle sleeve' with proprietary metal wine canisters instead of glass bottles: a patented valve system kept wine fresh for 30-60 days, and the sleeve's screen showed wine information, food pairings and reviews while letting owners reorder wine directly. It raised about $6-10 million and had a hit Indiegogo campaign in 2016.

02 / Kuvée FAILURE REASONS

Failure analysis

The core problem was a razor-and-blades model with an expensive razor and an expensive education bill: the FreshPour sleeve only worked with Kuvée's own proprietary wine canisters, so adoption required both selling a $199 device and convincing mainstream wine drinkers to change how they buy wine - which, as the CEO acknowledged, required 'a much louder voice and considerably more capital' to educate the market. Preorders sold out but the customer base never scaled; the 2017 Napa fires then hurt the ability to grow over the holiday season. Unable to raise the funds required, the company shut down in March 2018.
