01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Helio, Inc., founded in January 2005 as a 50/50 joint venture between South Korean wireless operator SK Telecom and American internet provider EarthLink, was a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that began selling wireless voice, messaging and data services on Sprint's network on May 2, 2006. Targeting US youth with advanced postpaid phones and content, Helio raised $440M before its 2005 launch and grew to about 170,000 subscribers.

racking up significant losses; TechCrunch: prior rescue capital to no avail.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Acquisition
