Thepeer
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Thepeer was a Nigerian fintech infrastructure startup founded in April 2021 by Kosisochukwu Chike Ononye and Michael 'Trojan' Okoh. It built a wallet interoperability API — B2B plumbing that let businesses with digital wallets (fintechs, neobanks, merchants) enable peer-to-peer transfers between wallets and wallet-based payments through a single integration, aiming to make wallet payments as seamless as bank transfers. It raised $220,000 in pre-seed and a $2.1M seed round in June 2022 (led by Raba Partnership at a $5M valuation), from backers including Rallycap, Sunu Ventures, Timon Capital, BYLD Ventures, Flutterwave and Chipper Cash.
02 / Thepeer FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
The founders shut Thepeer down on April 1, 2024, citing two blockers: compliance and adoption. Regulators blocked integration of key wallet providers, and the partner licence they relied on could not cover new product features. Wallet onboarding was complex and slow — each wallet needed individual configuration — and digital wallet adoption in Nigeria was too slow to make the service attractive to merchants. The founders concluded they could not reach scale and revenue fast enough despite remaining runway, and chose to return capital rather than pivot with investor money. After the closure, co-founder Sultan Akintunde publicly alleged ~$1.2M in investor funds was unaccounted for (about $700K unexplained after partial returns) and investors demanded a formal audit — allegations the company had denied responding to before shutting down.
