01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Hike Messenger was India's homegrown instant-messaging app, launched in December 2012 by Kavin Bharti Mittal and later rebranded as Hike Sticker Chat. Positioned as a rival to WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Viber, it drew on local-language stickers and chat features. It raised over $260 million from investors including Tencent ($175 million), Foxconn and the Bharti group — SoftBank and Bharti were its initial backers — reaching a $1.4 billion valuation in 2016.

02 / Hike Messenger FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Hike could not overcome WhatsApp's global network effects in India: as Mittal put it in January 2021, India would not get its own messenger because global network effects were too strong. The app had become bloated and complicated, forcing 25% layoffs in 2018, and the company prioritized growth over monetization, only seriously pursuing revenue in 2020, eight years after launch. Pivots into specialized apps — Vibe for social experiences and Rush for gaming — failed to gain significant traction.
