NopeaRide
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
NopeaRide was Kenya's first fully electric taxi service. Launched in August 2018 in Nairobi (initially as NopiaRide) by Finnish company EkoRent Oy — founded in 2014 by Juha Suojanen to build electric-vehicle and solar solutions — it operated a fleet of electric taxis plus its own charging network and driver/rider apps, competing with Uber and Bolt while pushing environmentally friendly transport. The service grew from 3 vehicles to 70 by the time of its closure and had built a charging network across Nairobi. In November 2022 it exited the market after its Finnish parent became insolvent.
02 / NopeaRide FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
NopeaRide was felled by a combination of bad timing and dry capital. A fleet expansion funded in late 2019 delivered new vehicles to Nairobi just as Kenya's strict COVID-19 curfew rules were imposed in March 2020 — daily kilometers driven dropped roughly 60% overnight. Although traffic recovered to pre-COVID levels in the first half of 2022 and the company signed corporate contracts, the funding round needed to reach the next level never materialized. Parent company EkoRent Oy was declared insolvent in Finland, and with no additional financing, the company took its fleet off the road and wound up operations.
