01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Northvolt was a Swedish lithium-ion battery manufacturer founded in 2016 by former Tesla executives Peter Carlsson and Paolo Cerruti, with the mission to produce the world's greenest batteries using renewable energy and high recycling rates. It built Northvolt Ett, Europe's first gigafactory, in Skellefteå, Sweden, raised roughly $15 billion from investors including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Microsoft, and Volkswagen, and secured about $50 billion in customer orders. In November 2024 it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States with $5.8 billion in debt and $30 million in cash; on March 12, 2025, it filed for bankruptcy in Sweden.

02 / Northvolt FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Northvolt collapsed under the weight of its own ambition combined with unforgiving market conditions. Production ramp-up at Northvolt Ett repeatedly missed output targets, while safety incidents and quality problems eroded customer confidence — BMW cancelled a €2 billion contract in June 2024 and Scania complained about delivery delays. Meanwhile, aggressive capacity expansion burned cash at roughly $100 million per month, and Chinese competitors like CATL and BYD kept driving prices down, making Europe's cost base hard to sustain. With $50 billion of orders on paper but only modest production to show, financing dried up: by the November 2024 Chapter 11 filing the company had $5.8 billion in debt against $30 million in cash. CEO Peter Carlsson resigned the day after the filing, and the Swedish bankruptcy in March 2025 ended Europe's best hope for homegrown battery independence.
