01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Sudden Coffee was a San Francisco-based specialty instant coffee manufacturer founded in 2015 by Joshua Zloof and Kalle Freese (with advisors Caterina Fake and Jyri Engestrom). It made 'crystallized' instant coffee: single-origin beans from roasters like Equator and Intelligentsia were fully brewed at a lower temperature (85-90 C) to avoid over-extraction, then freeze-dried in small batches and hand-packed in recyclable containers - coffee you could make in seconds. It started as a monthly subscription service, closed a $2.7 million round led by CRV in December 2016, and in winter 2017 became only the second food brand ever accepted into Y Combinator. The company closed in 2020.

02 / Sudden Coffee FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

No detailed public account of why Sudden Coffee closed was ever published. What is on record: a premium instant-coffee product - hand-packed, freeze-dried in small batches, priced far above commodity instant - competing in a market dominated by cheap instant coffee and the convenience of brewing, with the extra cost of freeze-drying and small-batch logistics. PitchBook records the company as Out of Business on July 30, 2020. The specific cause of closure was not disclosed.
