Ambition
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
A venture investment business focused on fitness and wellness.
02 / Ambition FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors supported by the current evidence
Founder Anne Mahlum said that after launching NYC multi-concept fitness studios Ambition she experienced panic attacks, that the same early-Solidcore facilities problems recurred (mold, change-of-use, plumbing), and that she concluded she was not willing to spend another decade repeating that company-building story.
Mahlum said her body was rejecting the project and asked whether she was willing to trade the next 10 years to write the same story again after selling Solidcore.
She described landlord/space problems including mold, change-of-use complications the landlord had said would not be an issue, and plumbing failures.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Operations ended
On the 23 Jun 2026 Moneywise episode, Mahlum said that at the end of 2023 she shut the whole Ambition venture down.
- Product or service closed
She said 2024 continued with landlord/legal issues that ended about a month before the June 2026 interview, that she paid back investors a good amount of the money, and that she pursued legal action against architects and landlords. SDNY dockets 1:25-cv-00435 / 1:25-cv-05611 later caption Ambition Brooklyn Court St LLC and Ambition New York West 20th St. LLC in lease litigation, consistent with a wound-down studio operator.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
After shutting the venture down at the end of 2023, founder Anne Mahlum repaid investors, covering a good amount of their invested capital out of the experience.
- 02
Legal fallout from the closed studios lasted about two years: Mahlum pursued legal action against architects and landlords over the facility problems, with SDNY dockets later captioning Ambition Brooklyn Court St LLC and Ambition New York West 20th St. LLC in lease litigation.
- 03
No public accounting of the venture's total losses was disclosed; the founder described it as an expensive lesson rather than a bankruptcy.
