What the company did
MicThera is a Swiss biotech startup founded in 2023 in Ticino (Bellinzona) by Andrea Alimonti, Nicolò Pernigoni and Arianna Calcinotto, spinning out of the Institute of Oncology Research (IOR). It develops microbial-inspired therapeutics to tackle therapy resistance in prostate cancer - where resistance, emerging in about 10% of diagnosed patients, is usually lethal - and infectious diseases. Its proprietary platform uses AI-driven peptide mining and screening to identify and optimize bioactive peptides from gut microbes, turning bacterial effector molecules into first-in-class treatments with novel mechanisms of action; the lead oncology program is backed by preclinical in-vivo efficacy data and exclusive licensing rights to patented technology. MicThera raised a €1 million seed round in 2024 from Indaco Venture Partners' Indaco Bio Fund to advance microbial-derived assets from hit-to-lead, and was a semifinalist in EIT Health's 2026 Catapult program. No failure event was found; the company is still active.
