Bionter
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Bionter was a Riehen/Basel-based Swiss startup founded in 2020 by CEO Tobias Werk. It built sub-visible particle testing solutions for the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors: a particle counter using a new combination light-obscuration technology plus smart automation to detect and analyse particulate contamination in parenteral drugs and ophthalmic solutions - fully automated, non-destructive sample testing with single-use consumables, maintenance and training, applicable to biotech drug-product QC. It raised about $3 million (seed, plus accelerator support in 2022), employed 5-7 people and was already generating revenue. It entered liquidation in 2025; Bionter AG is listed as in liquidation.
02 / Bionter FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
No founder post-mortem is public, but the pattern is the medtech hardware trap. Bionter built a physical analytical device for one of the most demanding niches: pharma quality control. Hardware plus regulated pharma customers means long sales cycles, expensive validation, and capital needs far beyond seed stage - a company of 5-7 people cannot simultaneously manufacture, sell, certify and service precision instruments. Competing against entrenched particle-analysis incumbents required either a decisive technology lead or deep pockets; with $3 million raised, there was no margin for a slow hardware ramp. When the money ran out, liquidation followed.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Liquidation
SHAB publication HR02-1006230030 (16 January 2025) records that the Civil Court of Canton Basel-Stadt opened Konkurs over Bionter AG (CHE-402.649.314, Riehen) effective 2 January 2025, 10:00, thereby dissolving the company, which was renamed Bionter AG in Liquidation.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Hardware in regulated pharma is a long game: if your runway is seed-stage, the sales cycle will outlast your money.
- 02
Validate adoption before industrialising: manufacturing, servicing and certifying precision instruments is a company in itself.
- 03
Niche devices need deep pockets or a decisive edge: 'generating revenue' is not the same as sustainable growth.
- 04
A small team cannot do everything: 5-7 people cannot manufacture, sell, certify and support at once.
- 05
When hardware stalls, kill it early: liquidation after years of burn is worse than an early exit.
