01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Recurious was a Sunnyvale, California-based game development platform founded by James Miao, the co-founder of the game-inspired music site thesixtyone. It set out to make better educational games for children through thoughtful game design rather than dressing up lessons as games. Its first title, Dinorama, was an iOS simulation game for ages 7–12 in which kids built and managed a dinosaur theme park — learning to earn, spend and save money by building amusements, caring for dinosaurs and weathering events like rainstorms that raised costs and cut ticket sales. The company raised $1.5 million from Greylock Partners in April 2013.
