Zeku
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Zeku was OPPO's in-house chip design unit, set up in 2019 to develop custom silicon for the smartphone maker's devices. Its first self-developed chip, the MariSilicon X imaging NPU, debuted in December 2021 and powered flagship phones such as the Find X5 series. On May 12, 2023, OPPO abruptly ceased the unit's operations, disbanding a team of more than 2,000 people with less than a day's notice.
02 / Zeku FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Zeku died from a collision between a slumping smartphone market and a global chip war. Weak consumer demand and a 13% drop in global smartphone shipments in early 2023 forced handset makers to cut costs, while US export restrictions on advanced chipmaking equipment undermined the case for OPPO to build its own chips. OPPO cited uncertainties in the global economy and smartphone industry in deciding to shut Zeku and revert to third-party chip partners such as Qualcomm and MediaTek. Building a flagship smartphone SoC from scratch was a capital-intensive bet that the market downturn made unaffordable.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
In-house chip design is a multi-year, capital-intensive commitment that must be funded through demand downturns, not only during boom times.
- 02
When geopolitical restrictions hit the semiconductor supply chain, even well-funded captive chip units can become strategically unviable overnight.
- 03
Give teams a survivable runway: telling 2,000 employees not to come in with less than a day's notice damages trust across the entire talent pool the company still needs.
